James Lord

Visual Arts

Artist and graphic designer

I was born on the Isle of Wight and spent an idylic childhood in Yarmouth sculling around the harbour, sailing Scows on the River Yar and spending long hot summer days at Compton Bay playing in the surf. I studied at Bournemouth college of Art and then London College of Printing where I graduated with a BA Hons degree in Graphic Communication. After art college I lived and worked in London as a graphic designer for over 10 years befor heading home to the Island to work as a freelance graphic designer.

My art is a mix of illustrative prints, distressed nautical flags, fish and shellfish, and abstracted land and seascapes using palette knives, masking tape, layers of acrylic, adding plaster / varnish. I try to be a sustainable as possible painting on reclaimed OSB, plywood, MDF, particle board, driftwood, skip finds, offcuts.

Love of the water runs deep and I get much of my inspiration swimming, paddling out to catch a few waves a my home break at Compton, sailing on old wooden X Boats, walking across beaches and along coastal paths.
