Creative Training Sessions – 2023

The IW Creative Network Development Programme offers a range of Creative Training Sessions, online via Zoom and some in-person, all geared to inform, inspire and help develop your business skills working in the creative industries.

As a member of the network, you get access to all of our previous recorded Creative Zoom Sessions. Want to see what sessions we held in 2022? Check them out here!

Creative Training Sessions must be booked via the Eventbrite links which will come available in the News & Opps section of the website. All members will be notified when these become available via the monthly e-newsletter. Make sure to double check your Spam/Junk folder for this e-newsletter to book your place and access the sessions. Please note, Zoom sessions will open up 2 mins before the event start time.

(Don’t worry if you can’t attend the live Creative Zoom Sessions, they will all be recorded and uploaded to the Resources section of the website which only members can view when logged in.)

From Fringe Theatre to Film with Joe Bone

Tuesday 10 October 1.30-3pm, Online

Joe Bone is a writer and actor from the Isle of Wight.  

Schooled at Cowes High, he went on to study Film and Theatre at university. After successfully debuting his solo work ‘Bane’ on the Island in 2008, he took the show to Brighton Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he ran sell out shows to critical acclaim. He developed a series of ‘Bane’ shows and toured them globally from 2008-2017 with fellow musician Ben Roe.  

He was signed by United Agents in 2012, kick-starting his TV and film career, acting on-screen in Castles in the Sky, Endeavour, Six minutes to Midnight, Tom and Jerry the Movie, and more recently, Beyond Paradise. In 2018 he co-wrote the acclaimed thriller, ‘The Vanishing’, starring Peter Mullan and Gerard Butler, directed by Kristoffer Nyholm.

He was commissioned in 2021 by Big Talk and Altitude Films, to write the Colin Pillinger biopic, ‘Mars Express’, inspired by the Beagle 2 mission. In October 2022 he was commissioned by Sky Television to write a TV pilot for his original idea, ‘Contenders’, a series that charts fictional boxer Conor King.

He is represented by United Agents.

Joe will share some of the elements that have helped him find success in TV, Film and Theatre.

How to grow your artist account on Instagram with Digital Culture Network

Creatives are invited to join Nicola Barratt, Tech Champion for Social Media at the Digital Culture Network, for a webinar exploring ‘How to grow your artist account on Instagram’.  

In this 1.5 hour webinar, Nicola will guide you through using Instagram to promote your artwork – from growing your audience network, to driving sales.  

The session is perfect for anyone working as an independent artist in any art form – including painters, musicians, writers, dancers, sculptors, comedians, and more. 

You will learn: 

  • Best practices for setting up your account 
  • How to get the most out of Instagram 
  • Tips on building your brand 
  • How to grow your audience 
  • Using Instagram for sales

This is a beginner’s session, aimed at artists who plan to or are already using Instagram to promote themselves and their artwork, or sell their work. The session is aimed at people with basic to intermediate knowledge of using Instagram. 

As part of the webinar there will be a Q&A, during which you’ll be able to ask Nicola questions.  

The Digital Culture Network is a free service funded by Arts Council England, working to support anyone involved in the arts, creative and cultural organisations in England with their digital marketing.

Nicola Barratt has specialised in social media for over a decade, supporting art organisations, artists, charities, and the public sector, with their organic and paid social media.

Go For Growth bespoke business training for Creatives

In-person sessions: Monday 22, Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 May, all 1-3pm

This year, we’ve collaborated with Go For Growth to deliver three unique workshops over three consecutive days, in-person and online, specifically designed for creative individuals transitioning from being part-time or freelance, to running their own full-time business.

Go For Growth, is a programme to support micro businesses and small businesses thrive through online, in-person and 121 programmes and mentoring.

These workshops will be delivered for members of the IW Creative Network in-person at *Building 41, Northwood on Mon 22, Tue 23 and Wed 24 May 1-3pm, as well as online via Zoom on Mon 12, Tue 13 and Wed 14 June 10am-12pm, just incase you’re unable to come to the sessions in person.

    Delivered by Sarah Hall, owner of Creative Logic and part time Growth Advisor with Oxford Innovation. Sarah has over 20 years’ experience helping to make the complicated simple, and supporting people to take their businesses to the next level.
  • Clarity of Marketing, Tue 23 May, in-person / Tue 13 June, online.
    Delivered by: Effie Moss, Founder & CEO of Boost Marketing & Founder of the Handmade Association. Effie is a multi-passionate entrepreneur with 23 years + experience within the Marketing world. Effie’s journey has seen her grow a multi million pound handmade business, appear on Dragons Den and secure millions of pounds of funding for both her businesses and her clients.
  • Planning and Finances, Wed 24 May, in-person / Wed 14 June, online.
    Delivered by Colm Watling, a freelance business consultant based in Ventnor. Colm is an experienced non-executive director, mentor and coach for a number of SMEs and start ups across multiple sectors. He has advised businesses from pre start to established multi million pound manufacturing businesses on their financial plans for many years, from practical day to day management to strategy and raising funds (both equity sales and grants from a variety of sources). The workshop will cover creating a cash flow forecast, who and where to get help from, and the SME and start up financial background including available grants and loans.

* Building 41 is a new co-working space on the outskirts of Cowes, offering flexible office suites, co-working areas and an event space. It is located between Ascensos and BAE Systems in Northwood. There is a bus stop very close by the entrance to the car park and Building 41 has dedicated parking right outside the building which is free to use. The car park has two 7kW electric vehicle charging points, which are easily accessible by a phone app.

Surviving and Thriving as an Artist with Rosalind Davis

Rosalind Davis

Rosalind Davis is a Curator, Artist, art consultant, teacher / mentor, writer and designer.

She is co-author of ‘What they didn’t teach you at art school’ and has written a number of articles for a-n and other arts publications. She lectures at universities, galleries and organisations across the country including the RCA, ICA, Camden Arts Centre, UAL and for various universities outside of London as well as online for the  VAA and Professional Artists Institute.

Davis has been a mentor for a-n, Artquest, PLOP, UKNA and Shape as well as working independently with creatives for many years. She has led art tours for many orgs including the ICA (London and Boston) and the Whitechapel Gallery and contributed to BBC4’s Film ‘Tales of Winter’ as well as a number of podcasts, online talks and interviews for various arts publications.

Davis has been on many judging panels to select works for exhibitions and prizes including recently being an Expert judge for Jacksons Painting Prize, the Robert Walters UK Young Artist of the Year Award, Chapel Arts Studios and the VAA to name a few.

In her online training session ‘Surviving and Thriving as an Artist’ she’ll be covering the following subjects:

  • Representing yourself & raising your profile
  • Galleries and the Art World
  • Insights into Curating and tips on how to curate/develop your own exhibitions or projects.
  • How to maximize an exhibitions success, build relationships and new audiences for your work such as curators/ critics and potential collectors of your work.
  • Tips for generating your own opportunities as an artist.
  • Opportunities: where to source them and how best to apply for them. 
  • Working collaboratively.
  • Portfolio careers.

There are no prescribed or straightforward career paths for an artist and there are no golden tickets. This talk is about giving you the tools, to empower and encourage you to be inventive and entrepreneurial in your career as well as with your art to make thriving as an artist a more tangible and realistic possibility.
