Special Opportunities – 2022

When joining the Network, members will be able to apply for the following special opportunities to help develop their practice:

  • 1-2-1 Creative Business Mentoring sessions with Creative Entrepreneur Mick Smith
  • 1-2-1 Creative Portfolio Advice with Arts Advisor Alys Scott Hawkins
  • Photo Shoots of your Practice with Photographer Julian Winslow
  • Bursary Grant of £750 to help develop your creative practice

1-2-1 Creative Business Mentoring sessions with Mick Smith

Explore new possibilities and gain the confidence and tools to realise the potential of your business or practice with Mick Smith, an experienced Creative Business Mentor. Mick can provide you with up to 5 hours of individual Creative Business Mentoring.

15 places are available delivered over 3 sessions via Zoom between the following dates: 2nd – 8th May / 6th – 10th June / 4th – 8th July 2022.

Mick Smith has built up a portfolio of management and organisational development achievements during his career. Currently the Director of Bridport Art Centre, Mick previously ran Quay Arts as Centre Director between 2006 – 2010. 

Other achievements include project managing and delivering a creative industries business incubation space at the Arts University of Bournemouth, providing freelance arts business mentoring in Southampton, organisational development support on behalf of the Creative Industries Development Agency in Tower Hamlets and supporting the significant growth and development of ‘a space’ arts in Southampton for 15 years (including 9 years as Chair of Trustees). 

Mick has also been also a core team member of the ‘Flying Start’ Programme (providing entrepreneurship and business support to graduate creative businesses across the UK). In addition, Mick has been a lifelong musician, playing piano and guitar to a high standard. His long and varied track record in professional performance and composition includes live performances in 27 countries (including broadcast TV in 4 of these) recording and touring with various artists/bands along with writing for film (premiered at Cannes) and theatre.


1-2-1 Creative Portfolio Advice with Alys Scott Hawkins

Arts Advisor Alys Scott Hawkins will provide 1-2-1 ad hoc Creative Portfolio Advice for those that need support in developing their portfolios or requiring guidance in arts funding applications. (Dates/times to be arranged). 

12 places are available and will be conducted via Zoom (or online meeting tool of your choosing). Sessions will last x2 hours each, giving artists advice on their portfolios, current ideas or ways to progress in their field of work. 

Alys is a specialist in Artist Support, providing guidance and advice to overcome barriers, plan projects and make funding applications. Previously she led the Artist Development programme at ‘a space’ arts, Southampton, drawing on her long-standing networks within the arts sector across the region. 

Alys is also an artist who works with drawing and animation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and won several awards. She has worked as a freelancer, and run her own creative business making films for clients including broadcast TV. She has taught at universities in London and the South West. Alys draws together all these experiences to provide one-to-one support for creative practitioners working across the visual & performing arts.


Photo Shoots with Julian Winslow

Island-based Photographer Julian Winslow will provide ad hoc, bespoke Photo Shoots for creatives working in any discipline. (Dates/times to be arranged). 

8 places are available and where Julian will provide a day’s photo shoot and produce a series of fully edited images which creatives can use to help promote their work. He will provide creatives with advice on how to create tasteful images which they can recreate themselves – providing expert advice and how to hints and tips on correct colour continuity and reducing reflections.

Julian has extensive experience in location photography, shooting for clients such as Liz Earle, Rolling Stones Exhibition Cover, Ventnor Arts Club, Grand Design Magazine, Capital Radio, Bestival, IW Festival, The Dorchester Group as well as numerous artists across the IW and South region.


Bursary Grants

All members of the IW Creative Network are eligible to apply for a bursary grant of £750 to help develop your creative practice. There are two bursaries of £750 up for grabs. In order to be considered, all you need to do is fill out this application form.

Those who receive a bursary grant will need to showcase to the wider public how they have utilised the bursary to develop their creative practice, via Zoom or live session later this year.

Applications for the bursary grants are open now until Sunday 10th July 2022, 12 noon to all members of the IW Creative Network.
