Special Opportunities – 2023

As part of this year’s development programme, Members will be able to apply for the following special opportunities to help develop your creative practice:

  • 1-2-1 Creative Business Mentoring with Creative Entrepreneur Mick Smith.

  • Photo Shoots of your Practice with Photographer Julian Winslow.

All members can apply for any of the special opportunities. You can apply for all, one or none – it’s completely up to you on what you feel you’d most benefit from to help develop your creative practice, and it doesn’t matter if you gained any of the special opportunities last year. 

Please note, numbers for all of the special opportunities are limited and are selected by the IW Creative Network Advisory Panel based on the needs of each individual artist/creative by the information provided.

1-2-1 Creative Business Mentoring sessions with Mick Smith:

(NOW CLOSED)

Explore new possibilities and gain the confidence and tools to realise the potential of your business or practice with Mick Smith, an experienced Creative Business Mentor. Mick can provide you with up to 5 hours of individual Creative Business Mentoring across a series of three in-person and Zoom sessions.

X15 places are available, to be delivered over three sessions. The first session will be held in-person at Building 41, Northwood over the following dates: Mon 24th – Fri 28th April. The second and third session will be via Zoom, dates to be arranged with the mentee.

Mick Smith

Mick Smith has a long history of providing creative business mentoring including for Creative Growth Southampton, IW Creative Network, and Solent LEP. He has also been a core team member of the ‘Flying Start’ Programme (providing entrepreneurship and business support to graduate creative businesses across the UK).

Mick also has held a portfolio of management and organisational development roles, including at Director level both for Bridport Art Centre and Quay Arts. Other achievements include managing the delivery of a creative industries business incubation space at Arts University Bournemouth, providing bespoke organisational development support on behalf of the Creative Industries Development Agency in Tower Hamlets, and supporting the significant growth and development of ‘a space’ arts in Southampton for 15 years (including 9 years as Chair of Trustees).  

In addition, Mick has a lifelong creative practice of his own as an accomplished musician, playing piano and guitar to a high standard. His long and varied track record in professional performance and composition includes live performances in 27 countries (including broadcast TV in 4 of these) recording and composing for commercial release and touring with various artists/bands along with writing for film (premiered at Cannes) and theatre.

1-2-1 Creative Portfolio Advice with Alys Scott Hawkins:

Arts Advisor Alys Scott Hawkins will provide 1-2-1 ad hoc Creative Portfolio Advice for those that need support in developing their portfolios or requiring guidance in arts funding applications in May/June/July 2023. (Dates/times to be arranged with the selected creatives). 

12 places are available and will be conducted via Zoom (or online meeting tool of your choosing). Sessions will last x2 hours each, giving artists advice on their portfolios, current ideas or ways to progress in their field of work. 

Alys is a specialist in Artist Support, providing guidance and advice to overcome barriers, plan projects and make funding applications. Previously she led the Artist Development programme at ‘a space’ arts, Southampton, drawing on her long-standing networks within the arts sector across the region. 

Alys is also an artist who works with drawing and animation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and won several awards. She has worked as a freelancer, and run her own creative business making films for clients including broadcast TV. She has taught at universities in London and the South West. Alys draws together all these experiences to provide one-to-one support for creative practitioners working across the visual & performing arts.

Photo Shoots with Julian Winslow:

Island-based Photographer Julian Winslow will provide ad hoc, bespoke Photo Shoots in 2023 for creatives working in any discipline. (Dates/times to be arranged with the selected creatives). 

X10 places are available for members of the IW Creative Network to apply for. Julian will provide a day’s photo shoot and produce a series of fully edited images which creatives can use to help promote their work. He will provide creatives with advice on how to create professional images which they can recreate themselves – providing expert advice and how-to hints and tips on things like correct colour continuity and reducing reflections. 

Julian has extensive experience in location photography, shooting for clients such as Liz Earle, Rolling Stones Exhibition Cover, Ventnor Arts Club, Grand Design Magazine, Capital Radio, Bestival, IW Festival, The Dorchester Group as well as numerous artists across the IW and South region.
