The Development Programme

The Development Programme offered to individuals and organisations joining the IW Creative Network includes Creative Training Sessions – online & in-person, networking events & meet-ups, away days to cultural and creative spaces off the Island, as well as ‘special opportunities’ which you can apply for to help develop your creative practice or organisation, ie 121 mentoring & advice sessions, photo shoots and bursaries! Once you’ve joined the IW Creative Network, you are able to apply for any of the special opportunities when they come available.

121 CREATIVE BUSINESS MENTORING SESSIONS: February/March 2024
Want to move your creative practice onto the next level? Embrace the next challenge? Become better connected and overcome barriers? Experienced entrepreneur Jeanette Howells can give you the reassurance and tools you require to move your creative business in the right direction. x10 places are available, to be delivered over a 2hr session at Building 41, Northwood.

PHOTO SHOOTS WITH PHOTOGRAPHER JULIAN WINSLOW
Island-based Photographer Julian Winslow will provide bespoke Photo Shoots in 2024 for creatives and organisations working in any discipline. 
We are offering x10 places for members of the IW Creative Network to apply for. Julian will provide a day’s photo shoot and produce a series of fully edited images which creatives can use to help promote their creative business. Julian has extensive experience in location photography, shooting for clients such as Liz Earle, Rolling Stones Exhibition Cover, Ventnor Arts Club, Grand Design Magazine, Capital Radio, Bestival, IW Festival, The Dorchester Group as well as numerous artists across the IW and South region.

121 CREATIVE ADVISORY SESSIONS – ONLINE WITH ALYS SCOTT HAWKINS
Over the next 12 months, we’ll be offering x16 2hr long advisory sessions to be released quarterly to individual creatives, online. Alys is a specialist in Artist Support, providing guidance and advice to overcome barriers, plan projects and make funding applications. 
Applications will open in April for x4 sessions to be taken in May or June. Another x4 sessions will come available for creatives to apply for in July to be taken in Aug or Sept. Then again in Oct for Nov/Dec, and finally in Jan for Feb/Mar 2025.

COMING SOON… 121 CREATIVE BUSINESS MENTORING – ONLINE WITH MICK SMITH
This year, we’re offering x5 places to creative and cultural organisations a series of online mentoring sessions. These sessions are aimed at organisation wanting to focus on sustainability and growth. This offer is intended to support organisations who are already constituted/incorporated (although we will consider those on the verge of this). Mick Smith has a long history of providing creative business mentoring including for Creative Growth Southampton, IW Creative Network, and Solent LEP.

COMING SOON… BURSARY GRANTS FOR CREATIVES!
This summer, all members of the IW Creative Network are eligible to apply for a bursary grant of £1000 to help develop their creative practice or seed fund a project, event or activity (please note, cannot be used as match funding for ACE grants). There are x3 £1000 bursaries up for grabs with additional mentoring support. Those who receive a bursary grant will need to showcase to the wider public how they have utilised the bursary online or in person later this year.

COMING SOON… AUTUMN 121 CREATIVE BUSINESS MENTORING SESSIONS – IN-PERSON WITH JEANETTE HOWELLS
Experienced entrepreneur Jeanette Howells is offering a further x8 places for creatives wanting to move their creative practice onto the next level. Embrace the next challenge, become better connected and overcome barriers! With 121 support, Jeanette can give you the reassurance and tools you require to move your creative business in the right direction. We’re offering X8 places this Autumn to be delivered over a 2hr session. Sessions will be held in-person at Building 41, Northwood in Oct/Nov 2024.

THEATRE TOUR BOOKING WORKSHOP & NETWORKING: Tuesday 23 January 2024, (half day)
We have arranged an exciting workshop session and networking event for the Island’s theatre network at the Apollo Theatre in Newport. Mark Makin from ‘makin projects’ will be coming to the IW to run a half day, afternoon workshop on theatre tour booking. Followed by an introduction to Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants and Developing Your Creative Practice fund, by theatre Relationship Manager for Arts Council England South West, Ginny Graham.

WORK/LIFE/BALANCE: Monday 19 February 2024, 6-8pm
Join us with Artist and specialist in Artist Support, Alys Scott Hawkins for this unique session and first networking event of 2024 on developing a balance between life and sustaining a creative practice for members of the IW Creative Network. This will take place at Building 41, Northwood and there will be plenty of time for networking after the discussion.

THE LONDON GROUP Q&A: Saturday 20 April 2024, 2-4pm
The London Group are the UK’s longest-running and most prestigious artists’ collective. This year they celebrate their 110th anniversary with their new exhibition ‘111 Not Out’ currently on at Quay Arts. Participating artist and curator Tim Craven will talk about the history of The London Group, joined by LG artists to talk about their career pathways and a chance for audiences to ask questions. A brief networking opportunity will follow in the gallery after the talks.

PHOTOGRAPHERS NETWORKING EVENT: Thursday 25 April 2024, 5-7pm
Come along to our first networking event for creatives working in the field of photography – both traditional and digital processes. Here we will come together in the historic Dimobla Lodge – the home of pioneering Victorian female Photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron. Recent Artist in Residence George Budden will join us to talk about his sustainable workshop series (Arts Council supported), which took place earlier last year at Dimbola.

SUPPORTING GRASSROOTS MUSIC – PRESENTATION & NETWORKING: Wednesday 8 May 2024, 2-4.30pm 
Join us at Building 41 with Arts Council England Relationship Manager, for Grassroots Music in the Southwest, Rosey Brown for a talk on ACE’s Grassroots Music Sector funding. This fund is targeted to support rehearsal and recording studios, promoters, festivals, and venues to bring live and electronic music to the public, and support the development of talent. Come along to find out more about this fund and discuss what is needed in your area. Up to 6 bookable 121 slots are also available for organisations and individuals who might have already started preparing ideas.

BI-MONTHLY CRIT SESSIONS: Monday 13 May & Monday 15 July 2024, 6-8pm
Provided in collaboration with Quay Arts, we are offering bi-monthly group Crit Sessions for creatives working in disciplines such as visual arts, animation, moving image, photography and craft, chaired by specialist in Artist Support Alys Scott Hawkins. If you would like to be considered for the May or July Crit Session, please email [email protected] a brief outline of what you’d like to present, along with any links to your work and technical requirements to show your work.

COWES FRINGE ARTISTS NETWORKING EVENT: Thursday 23 May 2024, 7-9pm
An opportunity for artists and creatives from all disciplines and experience to come together and network at Moocow in Cowes. Hosted by Cowes Fringe, MAST Mayflower Studios and IW Creative Network, creatives will have space to meet others, discuss ideas and create plans and potentially form future working partnerships. This is a free event, open to all, with light refreshments provided.
