Joel Lines is a multidisciplinary visual artist, who works with a range of media to create a mixture of conceptual fashion and performance costumes.

A recent graduate from Central Saint Martin’s, where he studied Fashion Print, Joel is highly influenced by his experiences growing up in a community of artists and carnival makers. He always brings his own personal experience of the world to the fore in his work, where sustainability in the use of materials is very much a key concern, alongside the need to tell a story to his audience.

Joel uses a complex blend of techniques, ranging from freehand drawing and painting worked up into digital imagery, to photographic manipulation, screen-print, and 3D techniques such as paper mache and textile fabrication.

Since graduating he has participated in 2 Arts Council-funded projects, based in his home community in Sandown, a town and its environment which have inspired many of his projects.

In Summer 2023 he and volunteers helped create hats and costumes for the Sandown Reggata event, ‘Hats are back!’ A project to tribute legendary hat maker Gertrude Shilling and to revive the tradition of hat-wearing at the event.

Joel has also been involved in the ‘Heritage’ Fashion Show event hosted by ‘Stitch Department’ to create an outfit inspired by the theme of ‘Reflection of Heritage’ with sustainability as a critical element to think about. Initially, Joel took his main inspiration through looking at the Heritage of ‘making Do’ by looking at the 40s style in womenswear and menswear style during the war and making an outfit out of what he had available. A section of found Denim for the top and a mixture of colourful ties joined together to create the skirt and the tie collar. He modelled and performed it himself.

Joel often has modelled his own creations as part of his creative outlook and expression, especially over lockdown where he didn’t have models available,

when he was young he took on a mixture of activities that were available such as ballet, modern, drama, and Global Rock challenge. Joel often was inspired to create his own shows and plays at home with an edited soundtrack, costume, props, and moving set and scenery, dancing and performing for his family.

He is also passionate about film and photography and documenting the projects on Instagram and some on YouTube. Creating a set of videos with his family to music as well as his own songs created on GarageBand

In the future, Joel would really like to be involved in work that captures more of these elements that have shaped his work process when he is creative.
