Kathy Williams

Visual Arts

I am an artist focused on pushing the boundries of painting and exploring how painting can exist in real space, exploring context, place, time and change.

Williams is a graduate from the Royal College of Arts painting department.  She has always explored the traditions of painting and the immutable link painting has with image. She explores formalities concerned with subject, composition, expression, process and the materiality of the stuff of paint itself. Her default position has always been to investigate the process of painting and the nature of paint itself, and has developed an ongoing and everchanging dialogue with paint to constantly sharpen her visual communication.

Projects currently include a series of work developing painting in physical space. How can painting work when it exists away from a canvas / ground? Can it still effectively communicate to the viewer? Could a painting exist that has movement created by the viewer / participant, rather than a created, painted series of marks that gives the illusion of movement? A3d painting placed on a turntable would have an infinite amount of images as the paint marks move around, dance together and create different compositions.

She is currently engaged to create work on a larger scale- painting and paint as installation. The audience can experience the painting in real space and walk around and into the painted marks, viewing the paint in the context of the physical world ( houses, chairs, people, windows etc). The painting in this case is always dependent on what the viewer sees, and changes depending on viewing angle and place.

Williams has exhibited and curated across the island, and in the UK and Germany.
