Maria Bell

Visual Arts

Photographer & visual artist. Commercially she specialises in food, portraiture, craft & the environment. Her personal work explores themes of heritage, land & identity.

Her background as a writer has instilled an intuitive approach to visual storytelling, documenting depth and narrative with an unmistakable intimacy.

She’s commissioned regularly for The Guardian and is published in high profile editorials such as Conde Nast Traveller and Kinfolk. Commercially she’s worked alongside the country's top chefs, restaurants & brands including Angela Hartnett, Smokestak, Bloom & Wild & Toast as well as on books with leading industry publishers Hardie Grant & Quadrille. Her work 'The Saltmakers' was shown as part of ‘Our Isles’ an exhibition exploring the ‘Art of rural life’ at the Oriel Gallery in Wales.  

In 2021 she was commissioned by the Isle of Wight AONB & the CEP to document their ACE funded ‘Creative Biosphere’ project as lead photographer across ’21/22 also delivering multiple career workshops for the IOW College Foundation Photography students. 

Her current work ‘Of Salt & Clay’ is a visual exploration of the human stories of the UNESCO Biosphere here on the Island. Aiming to uncover a resilient part and people of the Island’s Biosphere who are striving toward a shared vision at a pivotal moment in the climate crisis.
